COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION

EXTINGUISHER, FIRE, DRY CHEMICAL

(HAND PORTABLE)

The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this

Commercial Item Description by all federal agencies.

1. SCOPE.

1.1 Scope. This commercial item description covers dry chemical hand portable fire extinguishers.

2. CLASSIFICATION.

2.1 Classification. The extinguishers shall be the following types, classes and sizes:

                Type I- Stored pressure, refillable.

                Type II- Gas cartridge operated, refillable.

                Type III- Stored pressure, non-refillable, disposable.

                Class 1- For classes A, B and C type fires (multipurpose phosphate).

                Class 2- For classes B and C type fires (potassium bicarbonate).

                Size 2-1/2 - 2-1/2 lbs (1.1 kg)

                Size 5- 5 lbs (2.3 kg)

                Size 10- 10 lbs (4.5 kg)

                Size 20- 20 lbs (9.1 kg)

                Size 30- 30 lbs (13.6 kg)

3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS

3.1 General. The extinguishers shall meet the requirements of Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) 299 Standard for Dry Chemical Fire Extinguishers. The size shall indicate the amount of extinguishing agent, in pounds (kilograms), contained within the container, with a tolerance of -0, +20%. The extinguishers shall be US Coast Guard approved and shall be marked with the appropriate “Marine Type” designation and  “Shape-Symbol Code”. The type I and II extinguishers shall be constructed be refilled and reused without replacement of more than sealing devices. The type III shall be non-refillable, intended for one use only. Type I & III shall contain the propellant within the container. Type II shall have an attached, replaceable propellant cartridge.

3.2 Chemical charge. The class 1 extinguishers shall be charged with multipurpose phosphate. The class 2 extinguishers shall be charged with potassium bicarbonate.
