COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
VALVE, BALL (SINGLE LINE)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
This description covers a single line ball valve used for control of water flow and hydrant connections and shall be available in the following classes:
Class A- Aluminum, hard coated, painted red.
Class B- Brass, cast, chrome plated trim.
Salient characteristics.
Inletsize - 2-1/2inch NH, female, swivel.
Outletsize - 2-1/2 inch NH, male, rigid.
Closure- Quarter turn ball valve,
Full flow waterway.
Self-locking handle.
Rocker lugs.
Conformance testing.
Maximum pressure test. A cap shall be connected to the discharge end of the valve and the inlet connected to a water source. Pressure will be applied gradually up to 1000 psig and held for 5 minutes. There shall be no leaks or structural failures.
Torque test. A cap shall be connected to the discharge end of the valve and the inlet connected to a water source. Pressure shall be applied and held at 600psig.Using a torque wrench, the torque shall not exceed 40 pound-inches.
Workmanship. The sections shall be symmetrical. Cast parts shall be fine grained, free from blowholes, porosity, hard spots, shrinkage, cracks or other defects. Exterior surfaces and waterways shall be smooth and cleaned by sandblasting, tumbling, or other accepted commercial practice. Machined surfaces shall be smooth and have a roughness of not more than 125 microinches. All surfaces shall be free from chips, pits, flash, burrs, and sharp edges. Workmanship shall be equal to the best commercial practices consistent with the highest engineering standards in the industry and shall be free from any defect which will impair serviceability or detract from valves appearance.
