COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
HOSE, NONMETALLIC
(FIRE, SUCTION, HARD & SOFT)
The General Services Administration has authorized
the use of this commercial item description.
This description covers hoses that transfer water from hydrant or draft to the pumper and shall be furnished in the following classes and sizes:
Class A – Soft
Class B – Hard
Class C – Hard, Corrugated
Size 1 – 2-1/2 inches
Size 2 – 3 inches
Size 3 – 3-1/2 inches
Size 4 – 4 inches
Size 5 – 4-1/2 inches
Size 6 – 5 inches
Size 7 – 6 inches
Salient characteristics:
Hose length. Class A – up to 50 feet, as specified
Class B – up to 20 feet, as specified
Class C – up to 20 feet, as specified
Configuration. The assembly shall consist of one male coupling, one female coupling, and section of hose of specified length.
Hose. Class A - Synthetic, woven, double-jacketed, lined or synthetic, woven, single-jacketed, rubber covered, lined.
Class B – Outer surface is reinforced with multiple plies of fabric and a helix spring steel. Outer cover is made of rubber, lined.
Class C – Same as Class B except corrugated.
Suction coupling. One threaded male piece with expansion ring and one threaded female piece with swivel section and expansion ring shall be provided. Suction coupling in sizes 1, 2, and 3 shall be furnished with rocker lugs, sizes 4, 5, 6, and 7 shall be provided with long handles. All threads shall be of the NH series, unless otherwise specified. Material of suction couplings shall be either brass or hardcoated aluminum at the manufacturers option, unless otherwise specified. The thread size for 4-inch and larger suction hose shall be standard for the size connections specified in NFPA 1901.
Acceptance pressure test. Class A – Shall withstand a hydrostatic pressure test of 200 psi and meet specifications satisfactory to the authority having jurisdiction.
Class B – Will not collapse under a vacuum of 23 inches of mercury and will also withstand a hydostatic pressure test of 200 psi.
Conformance. Hose shall meet or exceed the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 1961.
The issues of NFPA Standards 1901 and 1961 in effect on the date of the solicitation shall be used to determine compliance with these requirements.
