COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
BLANKET, FIRE (WOOL, WITH CASE)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Military Specification MIL-B-52309.
This description covers a fireproof wool blanket for extinguishing fires on personnel and a metal case for storage when required.
Salient characteristics:
Design: The blanket shall be 100 percent new or reprocessed wool woven to retard the passage of air. The blanket dimensions shall be 62 by 82 inches, plus or minus 4 inches and shall have a nominal weight of 3-1/2 to 4-1/2 pounds. The blanket shall be in a steel case. Extra or replacement blankets may be ordered without case.
Flammability: The blanket shall be fire retardant and capable of demonstrating an after flame time of not more than 15 seconds (average of five samples) and a char length of not more than 8 inches (average of 5 samples). Mounting provisions: The blanket shall be provided with sufficient mounting features such as buttonholes, web belting strips, snaps or other devices so as to enable it to be properly stored in its case and to facilitate ready removal for use.
Finish: The blanket shall be free of vegetable matter and shall be filled and napped to produce a flat finish.
Arm loop: A loop of suitable material shall be fashioned to one short-edge of the fire blanket. The loop shall be of suitable size and so arranged that it will extend outside of the case when the door is closed and allow a person to place an arm through the loop with ease. The loop shall be strong enough to allow a person to readily pull the blanket from the case and wrap himself or herself. There shall be one or more smaller loops provided as grasping aids to aid the wrapping procedure.
Case: The case shall be steel not less than 0.023 inch thick and shall accommodate the blanket and completely enclose it while allowing the arm loop, and hand loops to extend beyond the case. The case shall be so arranged that the act of grasping and pulling the arm loop will open the case and smoothly dispense the blanket allowing a person to wrap himself or herself completely by rotating his or her body.
